You gotta go fast because Lego is releasing a new Sonic the Hedgehog set on New Year's Day.
Inspired by Sonic Mania and the iconic first-level backdrop of the game, the Sonic the Hedgehog Green Hill Zone set is the result of the Lego Ideas program, where fans can submit their own product designs. The Ideas process is intense. A design has to get over 10,000 supporters on the Lego Ideas platform to be considered. Then a Lego expert reviews it and decides whether or not the design will come to fruition.
The Sonic Mania concept was submitted by Viv Grannell, a Sonic fan based in the UK, back in 2019. Sonic Mania is a 2017 game for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows. Grannell's design reached 10,000 supporters in 2020, and by February 2021 it was approved to become an official Lego set. Now, just two years after Grannell submitted the design, it's finally being released.

"I've loved the Sonic series since I was a kid—his vibrant colorful world is always a fantastic place to explore," Grannel told Lego.
Grannell's original design was focused primarily on the Sonic Mania video game, whereas this Lego set specifically hones in on the Green Hill aspect of Grannell's vision. The Green Hill Zone is a natural paradise within the world of the game, and it's the very first level of Sega's first Sonic the Hedgehog. Additionally, the Lego set features legendary characters like Sonic, Dr. Eggman, and the Eggmobile.
This isn't Lego's first Sonic the Hedgehog set. In 2016, they released a Sonic Lego Dimensions pack, but it wasn't as extensive as the new 2022 set. For example: This one includes 1,125 pieces, so don't listen to Sonic and go at your own pace.
Other Lego sets that originated as Lego Ideas include the 123 Sesame Street set, the Home Alone set, and the Seinfeld set.
The Sonic the Hedgehog Green Hill Zone set will cost $69.99.
