Watch this 5-second clip of lightning striking the Washington Monument

Local news station WUSA 9's SkyCam recently captured video of the Washington Monument being struck by a powerful bolt of lightning, illuminating up the night sky.

The Washington Monument is basically a big-ass lightning rod that distracts God's wrath from the White House. According to Atlas Obscura, the 555 foot-tall obelisk is "constantly being hit by lightning" — so much so that the solid aluminium capstone installed in December 1884 melted down by about 3/8ths of an inch within half a year.

Though these lightning strikes are fairly common, it doesn't make them any less spectacular to watch. Read more...
